Go Goats

Bob Wolter, Business Intermediary

Wisconsin is the largest producer of fluid goat milk in the country. Wisconsin alone produces enough milk to support several specialty cheese manufacturing plants, several fluid milk processors, and a growing number licensed farmstead cheese producers.

Members’ herds range in size from a few goats for home milk consumption to more than 9,000 in several commercial dairies. There are about 70,000 milking goats in the state. Together, these animals produced about 90 million pounds of goat milk in 2016.

Goat milk and goat milk products are important for at least three reasons; They are as nourishing as cow’s milk, have less lactose and are easier to digest! Most lactose intolerant individuals can consume goat milk and goat milk products with no ill effects.
